500px releases iPhone app as site grows past the niche

500px is one of Toronto’s most well-known startup successes. Borne from a hand-curated Livejournal group, we had a chance to look at the company’s Android app when it was released earlier this year, and it’s encouraging to see the tiny company continue its mobile focus.

Today, 500px for iOS has been updated as a universal binary for iPhone and iPad. This is the first time the service has been available, officially at least, on Apple’s smaller device, and it really looks great.

Like the iPad and Android apps, you can sign in with your account or view Popular pics or Editors’ Choices, and the interface is sparse and attractive. At this time you can’t upload photos to the service — that’s coming later, when the team figures out how best implement the feature — but for viewing content it’s as good as it gets.

You can easily view notifications when someone begins following you, or comments on one of your photos, but the app takes its social integration a bit further. With “Flow”, you can view a feed of photos that you or those you are following has recently interacted with, sort of like Twitter’s new Activity feed. This is a great way to learn about new artists, or to keep track of what photos are popular in your particular world.
